MLA Bibliography is a comprehensive source of scholarship on communication from many different traditions from around the world. It includes studies of folklore, literature, linguistics, and literary criticism, some of which date back to the 1800s.
Literature Resource Center is a broad collection of current and historical scholarly work focusing on literature from many different traditions.
If you're doing research that involves the history, meaning, and uses of words in English, OED is probably the most comprehensive and definitive source you can find.
